2004 2010 2015 2020 2026 Penguin AI era The tools change. The fundamentals don't.

If you're short on time

  • The fundamentals haven't changed in 20 years: useful content, fast pages, genuine authority — everything else is tactics
  • Every algorithm update penalises the same thing: people gaming the system rather than building something real
  • The biggest mistake I see: businesses chasing tactics before they have the basics right
  • AI hasn't changed what Google rewards — it's just made it easier to produce the bad version of content at scale
  • Local businesses have a genuine advantage: they know their market better than any content farm

I started doing this in 2004. I've seen keyword stuffing, link farms, article spinning, exact-match domain strategies, and AI-generated content at industrial scale. I've watched Google update its algorithm hundreds of times and seen the same pattern play out over and over. The sites that get hit are almost always the ones that were trying to game something. The sites that hold up are almost always the ones that were built properly in the first place.

What's actually changed

The tactics have changed completely. What worked in 2006 — keyword density, exact-match anchor text — would actively hurt you today. What worked in 2012 — guest posting networks, thin affiliate sites at scale — mostly got cleaned up by Penguin and Panda. The speed at which you can produce bad content at scale has increased enormously. That's exactly what's making Google's job harder right now.

What hasn't changed

What Google actually wants — and has always wanted — is to show its users the most useful, relevant, trustworthy result. That has not changed. Useful content, fast pages that work properly, genuine authority built over time — these things have been rewarded for twenty years and I don't expect that to change.

What I'd tell someone starting from scratch today

Build something real. Make it fast and easy to use. Write about things you actually know. Get your local presence sorted properly. Be patient — genuine authority takes time to build, and there are no shortcuts that don't eventually come back to bite you. That advice would have been equally valid in 2004.
