Web Design for Expats Running a Business in Turkey

If you're short on time

  • Expat-run businesses in Turkey need websites that work for both the local Turkish market and international customers simultaneously
  • Most web designers either speak Turkish or English — not both — and don't understand the expat market's specific dynamics
  • A UK-quality website built to Turkish market standards, in both languages, is the baseline most expat businesses here need
  • GDPR still applies to your website if you're serving EU or UK customers, even operating from Turkey
  • I'm a British expat in Fethiye — I understand this market because I live in it

There's a specific challenge that comes up for expats running businesses in Turkey that doesn't apply to Turkish business owners or to UK-based businesses in the same way. You're operating in a country that isn't your own, serving a customer base that might be local Turkish, other expats, tourists, or customers back in your home country — often all at once. Most web designers don't have experience with that combination.

The language situation is more complex than it looks

An expat-run business in Turkey typically needs three things from its website: it needs to be findable by Turkish locals who search in Turkish; it needs to present itself credibly to international visitors who expect a professional English-language site; and depending on your location and customer base, it probably needs to communicate in German too. Most web designers offer one of those, not all three.

Understanding the expat customer

British expats in particular have specific expectations from a website. They're used to UK-standard digital experiences — fast pages, clear pricing, genuine testimonials, professional photography. A site that looks like it was built five years ago and last updated in 2021 reads as unprofessional regardless of how good the underlying business is. The design and quality of your website signals the quality of your business to someone who can't evaluate it in person yet.

GDPR still applies

This catches a lot of expat business owners out. If your website is accessible to visitors from the UK or EU — and it almost certainly is — then UK GDPR and EU GDPR provisions apply to how you collect and handle their data, regardless of where your business is physically based. A proper privacy policy, a cookie notice, and careful handling of any data collected through contact forms are not optional. They're built into every site I make.

Why working with another expat matters

I'm a British expat based in Fethiye. I've been running my own business in Turkey for years and I've built websites for other expats doing the same thing — restaurants, dental referral businesses, villa rentals, professional services. I understand the market from the inside because I live in it. That's not something you can replicate by working with a UK agency that's never been to Turkey, or a Turkish web designer who doesn't understand the British customer.
